U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions with Russian intelligence officials while in Moscow, as confirmed by the Kremlin on Wednesday. The visit, characterized by U.S. President Donald Trump as “semi-routine,” did not involve a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Putin was briefed on the outcomes of the visit, which coincided with ongoing conflict in Ukraine and challenges in establishing lasting peace between the United States and Iran. Peskov refrained from disclosing specific details or topics of discussion, only mentioning that communication occurred through security services and not directly with the Russian president.
Trump, in a radio interview, did not elaborate on the purpose of Ratcliffe’s trip to Moscow but expressed optimism about its potential impact. He emphasized efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine as a crucial focus of the visit.
Past interactions between high-ranking U.S. intelligence officials and Russian counterparts, such as Ratcliffe’s predecessor William Burns meeting with Putin in November 2021, have played a role in diplomatic relations. Peskov acknowledged the importance of intelligence agency communications in sustaining dialogue between the two nations, suggesting a positive influence on bilateral relations despite current challenges.
