UK Braces for Widespread Snow and Ice Storm

Following recent major flooding, the UK is now bracing for potential “widespread ice and snow” this week, according to senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services. The anticipated snowfall may begin as early as today and is expected to intensify in the coming days. Simultaneously, the country is preparing for a significant Arctic blast, with temperatures possibly plummeting to -10C.

Mainly affecting Scotland, the snowfall could extend into northern England by the end of the week. Edinburgh, for instance, might experience up to 7cm of snow within a three-hour period on Tuesday morning.

Mr. Dale emphasized the incoming wintry conditions, stating, “As the Storm Claudia aftermath progresses, the next weather event is likely to bring widespread ice and snow to the northern regions.” Predictions indicate that the snow might start tonight, initially in the higher areas like the Grampians, before spreading more significantly across Scotland by Tuesday morning.

Furthermore, the Met Office also anticipates snow across the UK this week due to cold air from high pressure systems affecting Scotland. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley highlighted the shift in weather patterns, noting the potential for wintry hazards such as snow and ice amidst colder temperatures and widespread frosts, with some areas dipping as low as -7C next week.

Specifically, North Wales and the north-east coast of England are expected to witness snowfall, while southern regions like London may face heavy frost and freezing temperatures. London could see lows of -7C on Friday morning, contrasting with the forecasted -12C in northern Scotland.
