The UK’s defence chief has issued a warning about increasing threats to the country, following an incident where lasers were directed at RAF pilots from a Russian spy ship. In an interview with The Mirror, Defence Secretary John Healey expressed concerns over escalating aggression from Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for the public to acknowledge a heightened level of danger. He disclosed that the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized in response to the presence of the Kremlin’s spy vessel, the Yantar, in UK waters.
He highlighted the dangerous nature of directing lasers at British aircraft and sent a direct message to the Russian leader, stating, “We see you.” He indicated readiness to engage with the ship if it altered its course, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the UK and Moscow. The Yantar, known for surveillance activities in peacetime and potential sabotage in conflict situations, was observed near Scottish waters.
According to a Ministry of Defence (MOD) source, the Yantar entered UK waters between November 5 and 11. Healey emphasized the need for vigilance as Putin intensifies hostilities, particularly referencing actions in Ukraine. The Defence Secretary underscored the government’s commitment to a substantial increase in defence spending to address the evolving threat landscape.
Recounting a previous encounter where a Royal Navy submarine deterred the Yantar near undersea cables, Healey reiterated the growing Russian threat. Emphasizing the ship’s capabilities and past activities, he emphasized the UK’s monitoring and preparedness for potential confrontations. He further warned Putin that the UK was closely tracking the Yantar’s movements and stood ready to respond if the vessel proceeded south.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper noted Russia’s escalation following setbacks in Ukraine, describing ongoing attempts to escalate conflicts. She stressed the need for continued vigilance and resolute responses to Russian actions in various regions. Recent accusations by the Polish government against Russia for an explosion near a crucial train route were also highlighted as acts of state terrorism.
Efforts to address the Yantar’s presence have been seen in multiple countries, with the Dutch navy escorting it out of the North Sea earlier this month. The UK government’s stance on Russian interference was reiterated, with Downing Street refraining from detailed diplomatic discussions publicly. The upcoming Budget is expected to prioritize national defense, with Labour emphasizing its commitment to reaching the defense spending target ahead of schedule.
The Defence Secretary underscored Labour’s dedication to national security, contrasting it with perceived weaknesses in other political parties’ approaches. He highlighted Labour’s belief in the strength of the UK and criticized alternative viewpoints on defense and international alliances. The party’s stance on defense was reiterated as pivotal to safeguarding national interests.
