“Wolverine Video Game Highlights British Columbia Beauty”

A new video game featuring the character Wolverine is set to be released on September 15 for PlayStation 5, with scenes showcasing various locations in British Columbia such as North Vancouver, the Lions Gate Bridge, and the Sea-to-Sky Highway. In one scene, the main character, Logan, is seen riding a motorcycle along the highway, passing by two signs displaying the Squamish Nation’s language. The signs spell out the words for Whistler (Sk̲wik̲w) and Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) in the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim.

According to senior art director Gavin Goulden, it was essential to accurately represent parts of Canada in the game since Wolverine’s character originates from Alberta. He emphasized Wolverine’s status as a Canadian hero and the significance of incorporating real Canadian elements into the game.

The inclusion of the Squamish Nation’s language in the game has been praised by gaming experts for its representation of British Columbia and Indigenous culture. Squamish Nation chairperson Sxwíxwtn expressed pride in seeing their language featured prominently in a game centered around a Canadian hero, stating that it symbolizes their ongoing presence and vitality.

Industry professionals, like veteran game developer Cary Brisebois and Simon Fraser University assistant professor Sarah Christina Ganzon, commended the game for its Indigenous inclusion and representation of Canada. They highlighted the importance of showcasing Canadian landscapes and culture in popular media.

Aliki Marinakis, an Indigenous language programs manager, described the inclusion of the Squamish language in the game as a significant achievement, particularly for Indigenous youth seeking representation in mainstream culture. She emphasized the importance of Indigenous visibility in various aspects of society.

The Sea-to-Sky region, known for its picturesque landscapes, has been a popular filming location and is now featured in the new Wolverine game. Tourism officials anticipate that the game’s exposure of Squamish and its surroundings could potentially boost tourism interest in the region.

With the success of previous Marvel games like Spider-Man, there is optimism that the release of Marvel’s Wolverine will attract a global audience. The game’s cinematic action and portrayal of British Columbia’s natural beauty are expected to capture the attention of players worldwide.
