Yukon Energy has finalized the locations for constructing two new thermal power facilities in the Whitehorse region to address the increasing energy demands of the growing city. The upcoming plants, capable of utilizing either diesel or liquefied natural gas, will be situated at Deep Creek near Lake Laberge to the north of the city and on the Copper Haul Road within city limits.
CEO Joe MacGillivray disclosed that after evaluating 22 potential sites over the past two years, the company selected these two locations as the most suitable options, considering factors such as proximity to residences, emissions, and noise levels. The Deep Creek plant is expected to produce 90 megawatts of power, while the Copper Haul Road plant will generate 60 megawatts.
MacGillivray emphasized the urgency of the new facilities due to the strain on the current grid, which has led to power supply deficits in recent years. Addressing concerns about noise pollution, he assured that the company will adhere to noise regulations, aiming for compliance with B.C. standards as Yukon lacks specific guidelines. MacGillivray also noted that advancements in technology could mitigate noise levels compared to older diesel generators.
The decision on whether the plants will operate on diesel or liquefied natural gas is pending, with the Copper Haul Road plant initially planned to run on diesel. The project, estimated to exceed $100 million, is awaiting environmental assessment, with the company preparing to submit its proposal to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) in the near future.
The regulatory and planning processes for the project include complying with the city’s master plan for the Copper Haul Road facility and engaging in a partnership with the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council for the Deep Creek project, situated on their traditional territory. Additionally, Yukon Energy will strategize the placement of transmission lines to connect the plants to the grid, exploring existing corridors and collaborating with property owners during the planning phase.
Construction of the two power plants is anticipated to commence in spring 2028.
