“Fatal Coal Mine Collapse Claims Lives in Spain”

Rescue operations are underway following a coal mine collapse in Spain that has resulted in at least two fatalities. The tragic event occurred at the Vega de Rengos mine in Cangas del Narcea village, where reports indicate that one miner remains trapped after a coal collapse. The local Emergency Coordination Centre was notified of the incident at 4:58 pm.

Emergency services responded to a ground collapse on the mine’s second level in Vega de Rengos, approximately a mile from the entrance. They have reported that three miners are currently unreachable. Two bodies have been recovered as per information from Spanish source El Pais.

Mining has been a significant industry in Asturias for many years. The President of the Principality, Adrián Barbón, has postponed his weekend plans and expressed his sorrow and concern over the ongoing situation on social media.

Real Oviedo, a La Liga team based in the region, has paid tribute to the deceased workers, stating, “Asturias mourns. We grieve in coal black.” The club extended their condolences and solidarity to the affected families and community.

The memory of the tragic incident in March, where five individuals lost their lives in an explosion at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, Asturias, remains vivid. The victims, aged between 32 and 54, were residents of León province in north-western Spain, according to government officials.

Reports from local media revealed that the workers were at the mine under a mineral extraction permit for graphite production. Additionally, at least four others sustained injuries in the explosion earlier this year.
