Donald Trump criticized Afghan refugees, Somali immigrants, and Joe Biden in an impassioned response to the shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington DC. However, his accusations are flawed.
The US President singled out 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the country under Operation Allies Welcome after the fall of Kabul in 2021. Trump claimed Lakanwal was brought in by the Biden administration in September 2021, labeling President Biden as the worst in US history for extending Lakanwal’s status through legislation.
Trump emphasized the security threat posed by admitting millions of unidentified and unvetted foreigners during the prior administration, pointing fingers at various nations. He baselessly attacked the Somali community in Minnesota, falsely accusing them of harming the state’s welfare.
Furthermore, Trump hinted at increasing deportations following the shooting, vowing to reevaluate all individuals who entered the US from Afghanistan during Biden’s tenure. He stressed the importance of removing any foreigner deemed unfit or detrimental to the country’s well-being.
While it is true that Lakanwal sought asylum under the Biden administration, he was granted asylum after Trump assumed the presidency. Lakanwal’s asylum application was approved by the Department of Homeland Security in April 2025, and he was in the process of applying for a green card.
The identities and conditions of the wounded National Guard members have not been officially disclosed. Initially, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey mistakenly reported two fatalities among his state’s Guard members, later retracting the statement due to conflicting reports. These troops were part of the DC deployment during Trump’s administration in response to unfounded claims of increased crime in the region.
