Maher, who began his tenure as the team’s play-by-play announcer in 1980, called 33 consecutive seasons for the Flames until his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season. Known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” Maher’s passion and dedication were evident throughout his hall-of-fame career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their 2004 finals appearance.
The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging his significant impact on the team’s community and fan base. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before moving to Calgary to become the official voice of the Flames when they relocated from Atlanta in 1980.
