The competition for the mayoral seat in Prince George is intensifying, with current Mayor Simon Yu confirming his candidacy for re-election despite challenges from two popular city councillors, Garth Frizzell and Kyle Sampson. Roy Stewart, a local lawyer who previously ran for mayor in 2022, is also in the race.
In Prince George, a city of around 90,000 residents without a party system, it is uncommon for sitting councillors to challenge incumbent mayors. The city follows an at-large voting system, allowing every voter to cast a ballot for one mayor and up to eight councillors, fostering a collaborative environment.
While historically councillors have waited for mayors to step down before running for the position, there have been exceptions, such as Coun. Shari Green unseating Mayor Dan Rogers in 2011.
Despite the formidable competition, Mayor Yu remains undaunted, expressing confidence that voters will assess candidates based on their qualifications, passion, and leadership capabilities.
In terms of experience, Yu, a civil engineer by profession, is relatively new to city politics compared to Frizzell and Sampson. He emphasizes a methodical approach to addressing city challenges, particularly homelessness, mental health issues, and substance abuse crises. Additionally, Yu aims to bolster Prince George’s role as a service center for the resource sector in northern British Columbia.
In the last mayoral election, Yu secured victory with 6,092 votes, representing approximately 40% of the total ballots cast. Frizzell, with 6,911 votes, and Sampson, with 6,840 votes, closely trailed behind in the council elections.
Frizzell, drawing on his experience as a business owner and his long tenure on the council, highlights priorities such as enhancing public safety, rebuilding trust in government, and advancing economic development in tandem with regional growth.
Sampson, recognized as the youngest council member ever elected in 2018, aims to capitalize on the city’s economic prospects while addressing challenges related to public safety and investment. He envisions streamlining city hall operations to enhance efficiency and attract residents to Prince George.
The upcoming municipal election in Prince George is scheduled for October 17.
