A man tragically lost his life in a recent canoeing incident in Sudbury, Ontario, as it was revealed by authorities that he was not wearing a lifejacket when emergency responders located him. The incident occurred on August 13 when a canoe carrying three individuals capsized in Crowley Lake, situated within Sudbury’s Kivi Park. While two occupants were rescued by kayakers, the 26-year-old man was unfortunately found deceased the following day.
Expressing concern over the preventable nature of the tragedy, Andre Stewart, a seasoned paddler from Sudbury, remarked on the unfortunate event that occurred on a relatively small lake. Crowley Lake, with a length slightly exceeding one kilometer, is a popular spot among park visitors, offering canoe rentals in the vicinity.
Gordon Baker, a senior manager at Algonquin Outfitters, noted a significant surge in interest in canoeing following the COVID-19 pandemic, with many opting for outdoor activities. Despite the increased traffic, Baker emphasized the outfitters’ commitment to prioritizing customer safety, ensuring that canoe rentals are not permitted during inclement weather conditions.
While providing customers with essential instructions before they embark on their water journey, Baker stressed the importance of wearing lifejackets for personal safety. However, he acknowledged that once individuals are out on the lake, their actions are beyond his direct control. Baker highlighted the support network available on the lake, including cottagers and safety boats to assist in emergencies.
All outfitters require clients to sign liability waivers due to the inherent risks involved in water activities. Kevin Callan, renowned as the “Happy Camper” and an enthusiast of paddling, encouraged more people to engage in canoeing and kayaking. He advised newcomers to take the time to educate themselves on fundamental skills to enhance their safety and enjoyment on the water, suggesting that a few instructional courses can provide the necessary proficiency for a secure and enjoyable experience.
