A courtroom in Calgary was filled with silence on Monday as a prosecutor revealed disturbing text messages exchanged between two men who conspired to lure, restrain, and sexually assault women for profit by filming the crimes.
Steven Zwick, in a message prior to the tragic incident in February 2024, detailed plans to restrain his ex-girlfriend, Chelsea Davidenas, upon her arrival at a friend’s residence. Despite her courageous resistance, Davidenas tragically lost her life during the ordeal.
Zwick, initially facing a first-degree murder charge, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a life sentence with a 15-year parole ineligibility period. Another individual, identified as PR, is also implicated in the case, with a pending trial in January.
The court heard that Zwick and PR, with a significant age gap between them, conspired to lure and assault women to create and sell illicit videos. After their initial target backed out, they turned their attention to Davidenas, orchestrating a heinous attack in PR’s residence.
Following a harrowing struggle, during which Davidenas fought desperately for her life, the men left her body in the room while planning a subsequent assault on another woman named Ashley. However, their sinister intentions were thwarted when Ashley managed to escape and seek help, leading to Zwick’s eventual confession and arrest.
The presiding judge condemned the reprehensible actions of the perpetrators, acknowledging the profound impact on Davidenas’ loved ones, who shared poignant victim impact statements in court. The sentencing underscored the gravity of the crime and the cruelty inflicted upon the victim, emphasizing the need for justice in such horrific cases.
