Dolly Parton, known for her inspiring journey from humble beginnings to success, is now the focus of a new musical set to debut on Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production aims to narrate Parton’s life story authentically through her own words and the songs that have shaped her experiences.
In a video announcement, the 80-year-old musical icon emphasized that the show will delve into her real-life struggles, triumphs, and personal growth rather than just the glitz and glamour associated with her image. The musical will feature a combination of new compositions created specifically for the production and some of Parton’s classic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.”
Scheduled to kick off in New York City on December 7 this year, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027. Parton expressed her excitement about the musical, describing it as a realization of her dreams. With a musical career spanning almost seven decades, Parton has penned over 3,000 songs, sold more than 100 million albums globally, and earned prestigious inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Previously premiered in Nashville last summer to a sold-out audience at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, “Dolly” received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans. Director Bartlett Sher highlighted the profound connection viewers feel with Parton, praising her ability to inspire and bring joy to people’s lives.
The production promises to showcase a side of Parton that the public has never seen before, delving deeper into her personal journey beyond the glitzy exterior associated with her persona. Tickets for the Broadway show will be available to the public starting on Friday, July 10.
