Laine Johnson expressing shock at the extent of the destruction after visiting the site. Leary’s recent statements shed light on the “really substantial” issues at Moodie station and raise concerns about the opening timeline of the western extension, which is already delayed.
The exact timeline for the redesign of Moodie station remains uncertain, as Leary emphasized the importance of carefully considering the design and timeframe for the project. He mentioned that a report on the damage, expected in mid-September, would provide insights into the necessary replacements and remediation efforts required due to the extensive damage caused by the flooding.
Leary emphasized the need to make informed decisions about the station’s reconstruction to prevent future damages, highlighting the challenges posed by the powerful force of water. Discussions are ongoing internally with the city to determine the best course of action for the redesign at Moodie station, with a focus on ensuring that the reconstruction is done correctly to avoid potential setbacks in the future.
The city’s director of rail construction, Richard Holder, stated in a memo to councillors that repairs to electrical equipment, track sections, ballast, and other infrastructure at the Moodie station area would be necessary. An external consultant has been engaged to assess the overall schedule for the western extension, with updates expected in early 2027.
The western extension forms part of Ottawa’s Stage 2 light rail expansion, initially scheduled for completion by 2023. However, delays have pushed the projected launch of the western extension to late 2027, according to transit committee chair Glen Gower. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed concern about the situation at Moodie station, emphasizing the need for caution and thorough planning to avoid potential future disruptions to the LRT system.
