“Massive Glacier Event in Nepal Triggers Deadly Floods”

Geoscientist Jakob Steiner describes the recent glacier event on Nepal’s Himalayas as resembling a slice with a knife, with a massive chunk of ice, rock, and sediment detaching from the glacier and plummeting down 1.2 km. This caused a temporary damming of the river below, leading to the formation of a lake. Subsequently, when the lake filled with the released water, the dam breached, triggering a destructive flood that engulfed downstream villages on both sides of the border.

The aftermath of this catastrophe includes the formation of additional lakes that could potentially rupture, exacerbating the loss of life and devastation. The death toll stands at 579 individuals, with 1,400 others missing in Nepal, including 32 Canadian citizens and residents.

The mountain in question, Langtang Lirung, has been dubbed an “angry mountain” by indigenous people in the area, who have been warning climbers about its dangers for years.

While some climate scientists are cautious about directly attributing this event solely to human-induced climate change, experts studying glacier hydrology and the impact of global warming on the cryosphere have long warned about such catastrophic events, particularly in the Himalayas.

The disaster underscores the urgent need for action to mitigate climate change and its consequences. The warming climate, fueled by fossil fuel emissions, has significantly impacted the Himalayan region, altering precipitation patterns, accelerating glacier retreat, and increasing the frequency of extreme events like avalanches and floods.

GLOFs, such as the recent incident in Nepal, are becoming more prevalent globally due to climate change-induced ice loss and the expansion of glacial lakes. Research indicates that millions of people living near glacier regions are at risk of GLOFs, highlighting the critical need for proactive measures to address these growing threats.

The devastation caused by such floods can have long-lasting effects, disrupting water sources for drinking and irrigation. It is imperative for governments and communities to prioritize climate action and disaster preparedness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
