Martin St. Louis has extended his coaching contract with the Montreal Canadiens, securing his leadership role beyond the current season. The announcement was made during the team’s season-opening golf event. St. Louis, originally on the final year of his deal, is now committed to the Canadiens until the 2029-30 NHL season.
Expressing his dedication, St. Louis mentioned, “I am passionate about coaching the Canadiens, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue guiding the team. Whether I am chosen or not, my commitment and love for the job remain unwavering.”
Under St. Louis’ guidance, the Canadiens have seen significant improvement, reaching the Eastern Conference final last season after consecutive playoff appearances. Following Dominique Ducharme’s departure in February 2022, St. Louis took over as the interim coach and was later promoted to the head coaching position on a permanent basis.
Captain Nick Suzuki praised St. Louis for revitalizing the team during challenging times, stating, “Marty brought a positive change to our team culture, keeping the environment light and enjoyable even in tough situations. He continuously pushes us to improve and has become my favorite coach.”
With a coaching record of 163-155-47, St. Louis is among the NHL’s longest-tenured active coaches, recognized for his efforts in transforming the Canadiens into a competitive force. Kent Hughes, the Canadiens’ general manager, commended St. Louis for his leadership and teaching abilities, emphasizing the team’s aspirations to reach championship levels under his guidance.
A former player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018, St. Louis had a successful career, culminating in accolades such as the Hart Trophy and the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004. Known for his continuous pursuit of improvement, St. Louis has recently added Derek Lalonde, a former Detroit Red Wings coach, to his coaching staff as the Canadiens continue their journey towards success.
