Denis Shapovalov from Canada has advanced to the second round of the Japan Open tennis tournament in Tokyo. He secured a victory over Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro with a score of 7-5, 6-1, showcasing a strong performance. Shapovalov, aged 27 and hailing from Richmond Hill, Ont., demonstrated his skill by delivering 11 aces compared to Shimabukuro’s single ace and minimizing errors with just two double faults while his opponent had six.
Ranked 46th globally, Shapovalov leveled his season record at 19-19 with this win. His next challenge in the Round of 16 will be against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, with the potential to face top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, overcame a tough second-set challenge to defeat American Alex Michelsen 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 in another match of the day. Meanwhile, third-seeded Taylor Fritz suffered a defeat against Spain’s Jaume Munar with a score of 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3. Alcaraz, who triumphed over Fritz at the Laver Cup in London last week, continues to showcase his prowess on the court.
In a separate match, Kei Nishikori bid farewell to his illustrious tennis career at the Japan Open. The former U.S. Open finalist, aged 36 and with a career-high ranking of No. 4, faced a defeat of 6-4, 6-4 against second-seeded Frances Tiafoe in the first round. Nishikori, who previously announced his retirement scheduled for the year-end, expressed mixed emotions about participating in his final elite-level tournament on home ground in Japan.
Nishikori, a two-time winner of the Japan Open in 2012 and 2014, concluded his career with this match. Throughout his career, he made significant achievements, including being the first Japanese player to reach the final of a Grand Slam men’s singles tournament at the 2014 U.S. Open. Nishikori’s journey in professional tennis, which began in 2007, has left a lasting impact despite struggles with injuries in recent years.
