“Students in Northeastern Ontario Navigate Changes to OSAP”

College and university students in northeastern Ontario have resumed classes this week. Many students are adjusting to changes in the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) that were introduced by the province earlier this year. Sara Wright, a third-year concurrent education student at Laurentian University in Sudbury, mentioned that she usually relies on OSAP for financial support but noticed a $1,000 reduction in funding this fall. She emphasized that this decrease significantly impacts her finances, especially considering the high costs of education and living expenses.

Wright revealed that by her third year, she has already utilized other funding sources, such as an education savings plan, and is now seeking additional work opportunities to stabilize her financial situation. Curtis Radey, the manager of student awards and fees at Laurentian University, explained that despite the changes to OSAP, most students are still receiving a similar total amount of financial aid. However, a larger portion of the funding now comes in the form of loans rather than grants, increasing the debt burden on students in the long run.

Radey acknowledged that students have accepted the alterations to the program, noting that the majority prefer OSAP loans over other forms of debt. Laurentian University has expanded its financial assistance programs to help students cope with the OSAP changes and the rising costs of rent and food. Additionally, tuition fees have increased by two percent this year following the province’s decision to lift the seven-year freeze on tuition.

Lynn Wells, the president of Laurentian University, emphasized the necessity of tuition hikes to support the university’s operations and enhance the academic experience for students. At Cambrian College in Sudbury, Jeremy Potter, a financial aid administrator, reported that while there has been a noticeable increase in student inquiries about financial aid, the impact of the OSAP changes has not fully resonated with students yet. Despite expectations of higher demand, the college has not experienced a significant surge in requests for information regarding the altered OSAP program.
