Between Monday and Thursday, Waterloo region experienced a total of 70 suspected cases of drug poisonings or overdoses. The Overdose Monitoring Alert and Response System in southern Ontario issued a cautionary notice on Friday regarding yellow powdered substances. This alert, initially established on Sept. 18, has been extended due to reports of rapid and intense sedation effects associated with these drugs.
Individuals consuming unregulated fentanyl obtained from street sources are at a heightened risk, as indicated by the alert. Recent findings from Sanguen’s Drug Checking Program revealed a mixture of fentanyl with other substances, including non-opioids like medetomidine, anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines, and opioids like para-fluorofentanyl and nitazenes.
The advisory emphasized the toxicity of street drugs, warning that their composition may differ from expectations, leading to unforeseen reactions. Users may experience swift sedation, requiring increased doses of naloxone for revival even after a single dose.
Initiated following 48 suspected overdoses and one fatality between Sept. 14 and 17, the alert underscores the importance of promptly seeking medical assistance by calling 911, remaining with the affected person until help arrives, and administering naloxone when available.
