Christina Cristillo, speaking at a court session in Newmarket, Ontario, expressed profound sorrow and devastation following the tragic loss of her husband, Andrew Cristillo, who was killed in a head-on collision near Whitchurch-Stouffville on August 3, 2025. She described Andrew as her rock and the pillar of their family, emphasizing the immense void his absence has created in their lives.
In a moving victim impact statement, Christina recounted how Andrew was not only her hero but also a beloved father figure to their three daughters. The impact of Andrew’s untimely death was also shared by other family members, including his father, Danny Cristillo, who highlighted the emotional turmoil and physical toll the loss has taken on him.
The sentencing hearing was related to Jaiwin Victor Kirubananthan, who had admitted guilt to charges of dangerous driving causing death and failing to stay at the accident scene. The collision resulted in Andrew’s tragic death at the scene, while Christina and their daughters sustained injuries requiring hospitalization, with the children receiving treatment at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
Christina, who is battling stage four breast cancer, described the harrowing experience of surviving the crash alongside her husband and children, expressing the ongoing trauma and nightmares it has caused. She reminisced about her long-standing relationship with Andrew, highlighting the profound love and irreplaceable role he played in their lives.
Danny Cristillo shared his heart-wrenching experience of purchasing a suit for his son’s wedding and, years later, having to buy a suit for his son’s funeral, underscoring the emotional upheaval and unpreparedness for such a tragic loss. Jordan Cristillo, Andrew’s brother, spoke out seeking justice for Andrew and his family, emphasizing the impact of the incident on their lives.
In response to the tragedy, Ontario Premier Doug Ford engaged with the Cristillo family, leading to the introduction of the Keeping Criminals Behind Bars Act in November 2025, aimed at enhancing penalties for dangerous driving offenses. This legislation allows for immediate roadside driver’s license suspension and vehicle impoundment in cases of suspected dangerous driving.
