“Government to Unveil $350M Funding for Skilled Trades Growth”

The federal government is set to unveil a significant funding initiative aimed at supporting the development of new infrastructure, equipment, and workforce training by unions and other organizations. Secretary of State for Labour, John Zerucelli, is expected to announce over $350 million in funding, as revealed by a senior government official speaking on background. The funding is in line with the objectives outlined in the spring economic update initiative known as Team Canada Strong, which aims to recruit, train, and employ 80,000 to 100,000 skilled trades workers with the Red Seal certification by 2030-31.

This funding effort is part of a larger strategy to address the shortfall of more than 20,000 skilled trades workers annually. It coincides with the progress of the Liberals’ C-39 bill, which seeks to expedite approvals for major projects and construction activities within Parliament.

The funding allocation will be distributed through the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) and funds earmarked in the spring economic update, divided into three main streams. The first stream will focus on financing equipment investments for training organizations in Red Seal trades, with the government covering up to 70% of the training equipment costs. The second stream, dedicated to infrastructure, aims to support the expansion or construction of training centers across the country. The third stream, innovation, will provide funding for initiatives that enhance recruitment, retention, and training in Red Seal trades, potentially incorporating innovative technologies and new apprentice recruitment strategies.

The formal announcement of this initiative is scheduled for Thursday morning in Metcalfe, Ont., near Ottawa. As part of the $6 billion commitment made in the 2026 spring economic update, the federal government plans to invest in recruiting, training, and hiring workers over a five-year period. Specific details on wage subsidies for employers hiring apprentices, as well as other support measures, are yet to be disclosed.
