“Quebec’s Parti Québécois to Swear In Amidst Ongoing Legal Dispute”

Members of the Parti Québécois (PQ) minority government, who secured victory in the recent general election, are scheduled for their swearing-in ceremony at Quebec’s National Assembly today.

This event occurs amidst an ongoing legal dispute regarding the legislation that permits Quebec lawmakers to forego swearing allegiance to the King. Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, consistent with his stance in 2022, has stated his refusal to swear the oath of allegiance to the King.

The PQ, led by St-Pierre Plamondon, emerged victorious with 59 seats on October 5, surpassing the Quebec Liberal Party with 40 seats, the Conservative Party of Quebec with 19, and Quèbec Solidaire with nine.

The members from other political parties are scheduled for their swearing-in ceremony next week, with the exception of the outgoing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party, which failed to secure any seats.

The CAQ wrapped up its final cabinet meeting on Wednesday in Quebec City. Outgoing Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette expressed contemplation over potentially succeeding Christine Fréchette as the CAQ leader, stating the importance of a team post-mortem evaluation within the party.

Similarly, Outgoing Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière conveyed that he is evaluating his future options.

The CAQ’s executive council is mandated to finalize an appointment by the week’s end, with the announcement of the interim leader expected next Monday.

Concurrently, the PQ cabinet inauguration is set for October 21.
