“Entrepreneur’s Code Red Chocolate Eases Menstrual Pain”

A Guelph entrepreneur has introduced a chocolate product designed to alleviate menstrual pain in women. Jessica Ulbikas, the founder of BioSnactive Foods, developed the Code Red chocolate bar as a natural remedy for period discomfort. Ulbikas, who suffered from severe menstrual pain, was inspired during her master’s program in nutritional science to bring an innovative functional food to the market.

The Code Red chocolate bar contains additional magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D, which are essential nutrients often lacking in individuals experiencing period pain. Registered dietitian Emily Arthur noted that dark chocolate already contains calcium and magnesium, which may help reduce menstrual cramps by supporting normal muscle function.

Each serving of Code Red chocolate provides 150mg of magnesium, 300mg of calcium, and 38 micrograms of vitamin D. Ulbikas ensured that the chocolate’s nutrient levels were balanced to complement other dietary sources of these essential nutrients. The recommended daily intake is two squares of chocolate, packaged for five days to coincide with a typical menstrual cycle.

Feedback from women who have tried the Code Red chocolate has been overwhelmingly positive, with some experiencing immediate relief while others notice improvements after a few cycles. Ulbikas plans to expand her product line to include milk chocolate bars and other functional food options.

In addition to nutrition, Arthur emphasized the importance of physical activity, adequate sleep, hydration, and regular eating habits in managing period pain. The Code Red chocolates are produced at Esta Chocolates in Kitchener, reflecting Ulbikas’ commitment to supporting local, women-owned businesses. The product is currently available at select retail locations in Guelph and is in the process of expanding to other outlets across Canada.
