Members of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) who won in the October 5 general election will take their oaths today at Quebec’s National Assembly. Under the leadership of Charles Milliard, elected in Orford in the Eastern Townships, the PLQ will become the official opposition to the Parti Québécois (PQ) minority government.
Charles Milliard recently revealed the official opposition’s lineup in the National Assembly. André Fortin, who won in Pontiac, will assume the role of parliamentary leader, a position he has held since last November. Madwa-Nika Cadet, the MNA for Bourassa-Sauvé, will serve as chief whip, succeeding Filomena Rotiroti, who will act as the PLQ caucus chair under Milliard. Julie White will take on the role of deputy leader for the party.
The party significantly increased its seat count from 19 to 40 in the recent election. However, a recount in the Vachon riding, narrowly won by PLQ candidate Affine Lwalalika, may bring the total down to 39.
The swearing-in ceremony on Monday marks the start of a bustling week at the National Assembly, following the recent oath-taking by elected PQ members. Québec Solidaire MNAs are scheduled for their swearing-in on Tuesday, with members of the Conservative Party of Quebec following suit on Thursday. Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is set to unveil his government’s cabinet on Wednesday.
