“Armand Duplantis Sets New Pole Vault Record in Lausanne”

After taking a break following the Commonwealth Games, the Diamond League track and field series restarted today with a unique men’s pole vault competition in downtown Lausanne, Switzerland. Armand Duplantis from Sweden, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion, set a new meet record by clearing 6.21 meters in the event. Although he attempted to break his own world record with a 6.32m vault, he narrowly missed it.

The track and field season’s final phase has commenced, featuring the upcoming Diamond League Final and the newly introduced World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

The Diamond League’s return was marked by an exciting 100m sprint event, with only three meets left before the champions are determined at the Final in Brussels on September 4 and 5. Lausanne’s pole vault contest served as a prelude to the main event at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise on Friday, featuring a men’s 800m showdown among the 2024 Paris Olympics medalists. The 200m races will showcase prominent athletes such as Letsile Tebogo, Shericka Jackson, and Amy Hunt.

The action will continue in Poland at the Silesian Stadium on Saturday, hosting top athletes in various field events, including the women’s shot put. Notable competitors include Sarah Mitton, Jessica Schilder, and Chase Jackson.

Sunday’s events will see Canadian champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers in action in the hammer throw, along with a highly anticipated men’s 100m race featuring prominent sprinters like Andre De Grasse, Oblique Seville, and Kenny Bednarek.

The women’s 100m race is generating significant buzz, with an elite field including Julien Alfred, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, and Sha’Carri Richardson. Fans can catch the live action on CBC Gem or the CBC TV network.

As the season progresses, athletes are vying for spots in the Diamond League Final in Brussels, with qualification based on season-long points accumulation. Notable Canadian contenders include Sarah Mitton and Marco Arop, who are well-positioned to secure their spots in the Final.

The global track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, showcasing the world’s top athletes competing for substantial prize money. The new championship aims to determine the best athletes globally in a more exclusive setting compared to traditional world championships.
