“Victoria Debuts Lime E-Bike Share Program Friday”

Green arches have recently appeared along the streets of Victoria in anticipation of the city’s upcoming launch of a new e-bike share program. This Friday will mark the debut of a fleet of green-and-white electric bikes available for public use.

This initiative follows a previous unsuccessful attempt at a dockless bike share program by U-Bicycle, which resulted in issues such as bikes obstructing sidewalks and being improperly disposed of in local waterways. Mayor Marianne Alto views the introduction of Lime bikes, complete with mandatory docking stations, as an opportunity to apply lessons from past experiences.

The Lime e-bikes, set to be released this Friday, will offer various rental options. Users can unlock a bike for $1.15 and pay 34 cents per minute of riding, with alternative pricing available through day passes and monthly memberships. Additionally, discounted rates are provided for low-income riders.

Lime has already established 110 docking stations across several neighborhoods in Victoria, with plans to expand to Fairfield in the program’s second phase. The aim is to create a user-friendly system that promotes responsible bike use and proper parking, as emphasized by Lime Canada spokesperson Carling Dick.

The City of Victoria intends to eventually set up a total of 200 docking stations dispersed every two to four blocks citywide. While some residents, like James Bay Neighbourhood Association president Trevor Moat, have raised concerns about the impact of docking stations on parking availability, Mayor Alto assures that efforts are being made to minimize disruptions and evaluate the program’s overall impact on transportation in the region.
