Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, currently at the bottom of the league standings, pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Rapid, who hold the top spot in the Northern Super League. The game took place at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 approximately 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized for Ottawa at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the first half ended, securing her second goal of the match and propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The defeat ended Ottawa’s 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling 54% of the possession, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13, with the Wild having more shots on target (9-6). The Wild also secured six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score and then added a second goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had earlier put the fourth-place Tides in the lead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6-4 on target. The Tides managed to earn four of the six corners in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
