A tragic incident occurred on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse on Tuesday afternoon when two SUVs collided head-on, resulting in the death of one driver. The Yukon RCMP received a report of the crash between the Crestview area and Cousins airstrip just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Following the collision, one driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver was taken for medical treatment. The Yukon RCMP expressed their condolences to those affected by the tragic event. The highway near the Cousins airstrip, located south of the North Klondike Highway intersection, was temporarily closed due to the incident but reopened to one lane about an hour and a half later.
Emergency medical services, the fire department, and the territorial Department of Highways and Public Works, in collaboration with the Whitehorse RCMP, responded to the crash site. By 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the highway had been cleared, and traffic resumed as normal.
The collision involved a black 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and a maroon 2000 GMC Jimmy, according to the RCMP. An investigation is currently underway, and the police are seeking additional witnesses. In particular, investigators are eager to speak with individuals who were present at the scene before the RCMP’s arrival and left before providing their information. These individuals may have interacted with other witnesses and could provide valuable details for the investigation.
The RCMP is urging the mentioned individual and anyone else with relevant information or dashcam footage to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
