The Portuguese Football Federation has taken action against Cristiano Ronaldo for abruptly leaving the national team camp, leading to his suspension and the initiation of disciplinary proceedings. The federation stated that the case has been forwarded to its disciplinary investigation committee, and the outcomes will be kept confidential until a decision is made.
Ronaldo, 41, departed the Portugal team camp during the recent international period following a disagreement with new coach Jorge Jesus regarding his lack of playing time. Despite Ronaldo’s absence or presence as an unused substitute, Portugal triumphed in all three matches, with his replacement Goncalo Ramos making an impact by scoring three goals.
Following the international break, Ronaldo addressed his 679 million Instagram followers, requesting acknowledgement from the Portugal coach for asking him to warm up on the sidelines but not fielding him against Norway, a request that Jesus did not acknowledge.
Acknowledging the likelihood of facing a severe penalty for his departure from the training camp, Ronaldo may be subject to a suspension of one to six months, along with a fine as per the federation’s disciplinary rules for failing to attend training sessions, matches, or national team activities without justification.
Although Ronaldo did inform the federation of his departure, it remains uncertain whether his reasons will be considered valid under the regulations. In a recent statement, Ronaldo expressed remorse and emphasized the importance of accountability, acknowledging that consequences are necessary for his actions, regardless of his status in football. He also assured his fans of future farewell matches as a gesture of appreciation.
