A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, is currently in custody, facing three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is already serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.
The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, unlawful entry with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs. The offense of robbery carries severe penalties, with a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, which can escalate to life imprisonment in cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or acts of violence.
Scheduled to appear in court again on March 19, Tarrant, aged 31, boasts a career with 502 victories, including three Group race wins. One of his notable achievements was winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In 2020, Tarrant received a six-month ban after confessing to assaulting another jockey in the weighing room. Moreover, in October of the previous year, he faced disqualification for a year for failing to cooperate with an inquiry regarding the alleged falsification of health assessment forms used for licensing.
The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission oversaw the case and directed Tarrant to provide a response, but no plea was entered despite multiple invitations over four weeks. The commission panel emphasized the seriousness of Tarrant’s actions, highlighting the importance of maintaining integrity within the racing industry.
The stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification was appropriate, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
