Sky Sports has made the decision to discontinue its newly launched Halo brand after facing strong criticism for its female-focused “lil sis” spin-off of the main coverage. The broadcaster drew backlash for being perceived as condescending towards women sports fans due to the launch of a TikTok channel featuring videos with love hearts, pink text, and a delicate tone.

In a statement released on Saturday evening, the broadcaster acknowledged the misstep, stating that the intention behind Halo was to provide a platform for new, young female fans but admitting that they missed the mark. As a result, all activities related to the brand have been halted. The statement emphasized the commitment to creating inclusive and inspiring spaces for fans.

The Halo brand received widespread criticism upon its launch, with supporters deeming it patronizing and cringe-worthy. While Sky Sports described Halo as aimed at female sports fans to champion female athletes, it faced accusations of being sexist and degrading.

Andy Gill, the broadcaster’s head of social media, had previously defended the initiative by clarifying that Halo was not a women’s sports account but rather a sports content platform with a female perspective.
