Manitoba farmers in Grosse Isle recently convened to explore the potential of utilizing cutting-edge technologies to mitigate risks and cope with extreme weather conditions prevalent in the ongoing season. Jacqueline Keena, the CEO of the Enterprise Machine Intelligence and Learning Initiative (EMILI), a non-profit organization in Manitoba focusing on agricultural innovations, emphasized the escalating variability and severity of weather patterns during this season.
Agronomy Day, hosted by EMILI at Innovation Farms Grosse Isle, brought together industry experts, entrepreneurs, farmers, and agronomists to delve into digital agricultural tools. The event aimed to showcase the practical applications of these technologies on a real farm, using data and feedback to illustrate how farmers can integrate these innovations into their operations effectively.
The event’s central theme, “weathering change,” highlighted the implications of the exceptionally damp weather this season on crop health and future harvests. Keena recounted the rapid alterations to their farming strategies following heavy rainstorms in June, which caused significant damage to fields at Rutherford Farms.
One of the focal points of discussion was Crop Intelligence, a data-driven agronomic tool that functions akin to a weather station, collecting data on precipitation, temperature, and environmental conditions. This tool, coupled with a soil probe, enables users to monitor soil moisture levels throughout the growing season, aiding in predicting crop yields and facilitating informed decision-making.
Charles Fossay, a seasoned farmer near Starbuck and director at Keystone Agricultural Producers, highlighted the value of tools like soil probes, particularly for irrigation farmers. Despite the potential data overload, Fossay recognized the practicality of these innovations in enhancing crop management and optimizing harvest outcomes.
Reflecting on EMILI’s evolution over the past decade, Keena noted the shifting industry perception towards artificial intelligence and novel technologies in agriculture. With a renewed focus on demonstrating tangible benefits to farmers like Fossay, EMILI aims to validate the efficacy of adopting new technologies on a larger scale before farmers commit to integrating them into their operations.
