After approximately six months of retirement, Marc-Antoine Dequoy has returned to the football scene, aiming for a championship title. The 31-year-old safety, previously with the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL for five seasons, is currently in Duesseldorf, Germany, representing the Canadian men’s team at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world flag football championship.
Dequoy made the decision to retire from the CFL in February due to physical limitations, realizing that his body would not withstand the demands of a full season. However, he found himself drawn back to the competitive spirit of the sport and accepted the opportunity to join the flag football team after some deliberation.
Despite his successful career in the CFL, including being a two-time all-star and winning the Grey Cup in 2023, Dequoy faced a new challenge in flag football. The game is played on a smaller field with different rules, requiring players to adapt their strategies and techniques.
Dequoy noted the difficulty of breaking old habits from traditional football, such as avoiding physical contact and adjusting to the unique gameplay of flag football. Despite these challenges, he expressed enthusiasm for the competition and the opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage.
Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal from the championship due to visa issues, Canada’s schedule was adjusted, with the team set to play against Austria and Japan in the preliminary rounds. The top finishers in the tournament will secure spots for the Olympics, adding an extra layer of significance to the competition for Dequoy and his teammates.
As Dequoy embraces this new chapter in his football career, he sees the potential for flag football to open doors to Olympic participation, fulfilling a dream that previously seemed out of reach. The focus now is on performing well in Germany to secure a coveted spot at the upcoming Olympic Games.
