The Manitoba RCMP has classified the death of a four-year-old girl and the severe injuries sustained by two toddlers at a residence in southern Manitoba as suspicious, according to authorities.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to a call at a residence in Long Plain First Nation after emergency personnel reported a young child in medical distress with injuries around 8 a.m. on Sunday, as stated in a news release by the RCMP on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the four-year-old girl had passed away at the residence. Two other young girls aged one and two, who were also present in the home, were transported to the hospital. One of the toddlers was in critical condition initially, while the other was stable. Both toddlers are currently in stable condition.
The RCMP has assumed control of the investigation due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the four-year-old and the serious injuries sustained by the other two children.
Supt. Rob Lasson, who oversees Manitoba RCMP major crime services, referred to the incident as “highly concerning” and expressed that the community is eager for answers regarding the events that transpired in the household.
Lasson emphasized that the RCMP is collaborating closely with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service and local leadership to address the situation and provide support to the residents of Long Plain.
