A man, aged 60, has been accused of assaulting a volunteer working for Alvin Tedjo, a mayoral candidate in Mississauga, during a campaign event on Monday night, as per the Peel Regional Police. The individual from Mississauga has been charged with assault involving a weapon.
According to Tedjo, the volunteer was attacked by a stranger wielding a knife while putting up election signs. The volunteer managed to disarm the assailant but sustained minor injuries in the process. The victim is currently recuperating from the incident, as stated by Tedjo.
The altercation took place in the Clarkson area of Mississauga, specifically near Trustscott Drive and Southdown Road, as reported by the police.
“Our campaign relies on dedicated volunteers who contribute their time because they believe in improving Mississauga,” the statement emphasized. It further stated, “While political differences are expected, no one should encounter violence for engaging in democracy or striving to enhance our city.”
Tedjo, who has prioritized public safety in his campaign, recently secured a significant endorsement from the Peel Regional Police Association. The suspect has been released under specified conditions and is set to appear in court at a later date, according to law enforcement.
