“New Dehcho Education Superintendent Focuses on Trust and Partnerships”

The recently appointed superintendent of the Dehcho Divisional Education Council (DDEC) is focused on fostering community trust and enhancing partnerships with Indigenous governments. Laura Ganyo assumed the role following a period of discord between the Dehcho school board and the locally elected District Education Authority (DEA) in Fort Simpson.

Expressing optimism about the renewed relationship between the board and DEA, Ganyo emphasized her commitment to cultivating a positive rapport. She highlighted her interactions with the DEAs of Fort Simpson, noting their willingness to establish a healthy connection with the DDEC.

Ganyo emphasized the importance of collaborating with Indigenous governments to engage the community effectively. She cited ongoing initiatives such as cultural camps where children participate in land-based activities to preserve their heritage.

Anticipating constructive partnerships with education councils across the region, Ganyo aims to promote unity within the educational system. In a previous incident in 2025, the DEA called for the removal of the principal of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ Elementary School, prompting an investigation by the education department. Despite some initial findings emphasizing the necessity of DEA member elections, the final report and recommendations remain undisclosed.

With a change in leadership, the school is in the process of recruiting a new principal following the departure of Adams. While attempts to contact Adams for an interview were unsuccessful, Bernice Gargan, a retired teacher who worked alongside him, praised his dedication to student welfare. Gargan lamented Adams’ departure, citing his strong work ethic and commitment to the school community.

Despite efforts to obtain input from the DEA regarding Adams’ exit and their relationship with Ganyo, no interviews were granted.
