Niagara is set to offer a plethora of activities over the Labour Day long weekend, marking the unofficial end of summer. One of the standout events is the Merritton Labour Day Parade in St. Catharines, Ontario, scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. as part of the club’s Community Days Festival. This long-standing tradition, potentially celebrating its 80th year, typically attracts a large audience, with various groups participating, including Unifor 199 and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. Due to ongoing construction, the parade will follow a modified route this year, commencing at Delta Bingo on Bunting Road and concluding at the Merritton Community Centre.
St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe and Coun. Matt Harris have highlighted that Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold will be collecting donations along the parade route to support those affected by recent floods. The organizers emphasized the heightened need for assistance this year, especially for vulnerable flood victims, with Community Care playing a crucial role in providing essential aid.
In addition to the parade, the Merritton Lions festival at the Merritton Community Centre will kick off on Friday with activities such as beef on a bun, music, and line dancing. Saturday will feature live music and a car show running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival will continue on Sunday with a kids’ show and fireworks at dusk, followed by a beer garden at the community center.
Meanwhile, the Port Dalhousie Lions Club is hosting a Labour Day celebration at its club location, offering live bands, food trucks, a barbecue, and kids’ games from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event, rain or shine, prohibits outside food and drink on-site due to liquor licensing regulations. Parking is available at designated locations, with attendees encouraged to bring folding chairs and pop-up tents.
Several other attractions are available throughout the weekend in the Niagara region, including the Niagara Greek Festival, the Marshville Heritage Festival in Wainfleet, and various pool openings for leisure activities. The historic Lakeside Park Carousel in St. Catharines will be operational, offering rides at a nominal fee, while the Morningstar Mill at Decew Falls will be open for visitors on Labour Day and throughout the weekend.
