“Team Canada Secures Bronze at IFAF World Flag Football Championships”

Winnipeg resident Jackson Tachinski expressed deep feelings of pride as Canada’s men’s flag football squad made history by securing a bronze medal at the IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany. In a thrilling match, Team Canada triumphed over Mexico with a score of 34-26, culminating in a game-winning interception by Guillaume Béland during overtime.

This victory not only marked a significant achievement for the team but also guaranteed Canada’s participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will make its Olympic debut. Tachinski described the moment after the crucial interception as highly emotional and surreal, emphasizing the indescribable experience of being part of such a historic win.

Looking ahead to the Olympics in two years, Tachinski expressed his eagerness to represent Canada on the global stage, highlighting the allure of competing in the prestigious Olympic Village. The women’s flag football team from Canada also secured a spot at the Olympics by defeating the U.S. 27-20, with quarterback Sara Parker earning the title of the tournament’s most valuable player.

In response to the teams’ remarkable achievements, Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea commended their success and expressed his immense pride. The upcoming 2028 Olympics will allow CFL and NFL players to participate in flag football, opening up new possibilities for athletes like Blue Bombers receiver Nic Demski, who expressed interest in potentially joining the Olympic team.

Team Canada head coach Paul LaPolice, with ties to Winnipeg, acknowledged the potential for incorporating CFL and NFL players into the Olympic roster in the future, focusing on celebrating the current team’s achievements. LaPolice highlighted the appeal of flag football, emphasizing its accessibility, creativity, and exciting gameplay.
