A temporary emergency department is being arranged in Dauphin as repairs to the city’s hospital following flooding are ongoing, announced Premier Wab Kinew. The Premier assured that emergency department services will be restored in Dauphin by Labour Day, as conveyed in a video shared on his social media accounts.
Acknowledging the community’s need for local emergency services, Premier Kinew emphasized that the temporary facility will maintain high standards during the hospital’s repair process. While specific details about the temporary emergency department’s location, services offered, and operating hours were not disclosed, Prairie Mountain Health and Shared Health did not provide additional information in response to inquiries.
Dauphin and the Parkland region experienced heavy rainfall in late June and early July, resulting in flooding at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre. The flooding caused significant damage, including a loss of power and destruction of the HVAC system, leading to the evacuation of the building and relocation of 54 patients to health facilities across Manitoba.
Following the hospital closure, residents have had to seek emergency medical care in Ste. Rose or Grandview. A memo circulated among Prairie Mountain staff post-storm indicated that critical infrastructure in the hospital’s basement was compromised, leading to prolonged service disruptions.
Concerns have been raised by local residents, including dialysis patients facing extended travel times for treatment and families with loved ones relocated to distant hospitals. Amid these challenges, efforts are underway to restore essential healthcare services to the Dauphin community.
