“Toronto Gears Up for Municipal Election with Civic Engagement Initiatives”

As Toronto gears up for its upcoming municipal election in just over a fortnight, various civic groups are actively assisting residents in becoming well-informed prior to voting day. The extensive list of mayoral and council candidates, each offering pledges on critical issues like housing, transit affordability, and public safety, can be overwhelming. To aid in navigating this process, several initiatives are in place to help residents stay informed and engaged.

One such initiative is the Toronto Public Library’s (TPL) citywide project called “Celebrate Democracy,” aimed at educating residents about the election, candidates, and the democratic process. A key component of this initiative is the interactive website, KnowYourVote.to, where residents can explore the candidates running in their wards and compare their stances on key issues such as public safety and housing. Additionally, the library is organizing events focusing on voter engagement, institutional trust, and combating misinformation.

In a bid to engage younger voters who rely on social media for news, a TikTok campaign has been launched by student journalists from Toronto Metropolitan University. Supported by the Toronto Foundation, this campaign seeks to increase Gen Z voter turnout through informative videos on candidate platforms, election issues, and voting details tailored for a younger audience.

United Way Greater Toronto is also actively promoting voter participation through its “Voice the Vote” campaign. With a field team of 15 local organizers operating across Toronto, Peel, and York Region, the campaign, in collaboration with community organizations, is hosting local events to encourage residents to engage in municipal democracy. The campaign is also funding community-led voter engagement projects and offering resources and training to community organizations.

Vote Compass, an interactive civic engagement survey designed by political scientists at Vox Pop Labs and hosted by the Toronto Star, is available to help users align their views with participating mayoral and councillor candidates by answering questions on key local issues. WardWatch, a non-partisan volunteer-run project dedicated to covering the 2026 Toronto municipal election, offers detailed information on every candidate in the mayor’s race and all 25 ward councils to aid voters in making informed decisions.

CBC Toronto is providing comprehensive election resources, including a mayoral platform tracker that dissects the promises made by the city’s leading mayoral candidates. To stay updated, users can download the CBC News app and enable Toronto push alerts for the latest election news. Additionally, CBC Toronto’s election special will air on voting night, with live coverage available across platforms. For queries on the election campaign, candidates, or city operations, residents can reach out to CBC via email or TikTok.

Toronto residents are scheduled to cast their votes on October 26.
