U.S. President Donald Trump made an announcement on Wednesday evening, stating that he intends to present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to retired MLB pitcher Roger Clemens. Trump praised Clemens as possibly the greatest pitcher in baseball history, highlighting his achievements as a seven-time Cy Young Award winner.
Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Trump reiterated his support for Clemens to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemens, known by his nickname “The Rocket,” has not yet received this honor due to lingering suspicions of steroid use throughout his 24-year career playing for teams like the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros.
During his speech, Trump emphasized the significance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, describing it as one of the highest accolades bestowed upon individuals alongside the Congressional Medal of Honor. The president expressed his belief that Clemens will eventually be enshrined in the Hall of Fame, acknowledging him as one of the greatest athletes and pitchers of all time.
Trump has a history of awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to notable athletes, including Tiger Woods, Roger Staubach, Mariano Rivera, and Lou Holtz. He has also posthumously honored Elvis Presley and Rush Limbaugh with the same distinction.
The unexpected announcement regarding Clemens came towards the end of a lengthy speech by Trump at the rally, where Clemens was present. Upon being called to the stage by the president, Clemens expressed his surprise and gratitude, stating that receiving the medal from Trump was a remarkable moment in his life.
Clemens, who hails from Houston, Texas, expressed his appreciation for the announcement being made in his home state. He commended Trump as a true winner, reflecting on the president’s qualities.
Despite facing allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs, Clemens, along with other renowned players like Barry Bonds, has faced rejection from baseball writers in their quest for Hall of Fame induction. Trump has previously advocated for Pete Rose’s Hall of Fame eligibility, leading to a lifting of the ban on the all-time hits leader, albeit without successful induction thus far.
