British Columbia’s gang task force is collaborating with the RCMP in Fort St. John to address a recent surge in gun violence. City officials are requesting additional police resources following three targeted shootings near local schools since July 22. In these incidents, four individuals sustained injuries, and one suspect has been charged, while authorities are actively seeking several other suspects still at large.
Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha from B.C.’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) confirmed that the agency has been approached for support by local RCMP and is in the process of deploying the Uniform Gang Enforcement Team promptly. Multiple homes and vehicles have been struck by bullets during the shootings, prompting concerns from Mayor Lilia Hansen about the safety of innocent residents.
The recent violence has prompted a city councillor, Trevor Bolin, to advocate for increased municipal powers to confiscate properties associated with gangs and violent crime. Bolin is proposing two motions aimed at imposing heavier fines on properties that repeatedly require police, fire, and bylaw services. He is also suggesting the implementation of a “good neighbour” bylaw, similar to one in Williams Lake, which could penalize nuisance properties with fines up to $1,200 under a “three-strike” policy.
While it remains uncertain when the gang unit will arrive in Fort St. John, Sangha mentioned that CFSEU had been deployed to the city last November under similar circumstances. Sgt. Jaime Moffat, the detachment commander of the Fort St. John RCMP, expressed deep concern over the shootings and urged the public to assist in providing information. Moffat emphasized the importance of reporting any suspicious or concerning activities promptly, as such details could be crucial for preventing future incidents.
