America’s brain drain benefits London as Western University in Canada attracts top research talent with a $541 million federal initiative. The government recently welcomed 64 professors to lead scientific research in Canadian universities, with 48 of them coming from the United States.
Among these recruits is Seth Guikema, departing from the University of Michigan to become the inaugural Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Climate Risk and Resilience Analytics at Western University. Guikema, a civil and environmental engineer, is granted $8 million by Ottawa to utilize data, AI, and risk analysis in assisting communities in preparing for severe storms, wildfires, and other natural disasters.
In an interview with interim host Nav Nanwa, Guikema expressed his decision to join Western University due to its esteemed reputation in natural hazards risk analysis and wind engineering. He underscored the significance of Canada’s substantial investment in attracting researchers like himself, highlighting the support for research and the potential economic benefits for the country.
Guikema’s expertise lies in assessing the impacts of severe weather on households, focusing on rapid recovery from disruptions in essential services. With climate change altering historical weather patterns, Guikema stresses the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to project future risks accurately.
