A ferry with over 260 passengers aboard overturned near northern Cyprus on Sunday, as reported by Turkish media. The ferry, designed in a catamaran style, was en route from Kyrenia port, also known as Girne, in the northern part of ethnically divided Cyprus, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province.
As of now, there have been no casualties reported. The vessel started taking on water a few kilometers away from the coast, according to the Turkish state-run TRT news channel. Erhan Arikli, the Transportation Minister of Northern Cyprus, informed TRT that the ferry had capsized, and rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the location.
The route between Kyrenia and Tasucu is frequented by several ferry operators. The specific company responsible for the capsized ferry remains unknown at this time. Video footage from the incident depicts individuals wearing life vests floating in the waters surrounding the overturned vessel.
