An individual born in Edmonton who went through a lengthy period of detention by ICE has returned to Canada and is now recounting his experiences during his time in custody. Curtis Wright, aged 40 and predominantly residing in the United States, was held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Texas for nine months following a trip to Mexico in November. His detention was linked to a minor drug possession charge dating back to when he was 17 years old.
Motivated to stay in the U.S. to be close to his two young sons, aged 8 and 11, from a previous marriage, Wright was eventually deported back to Canada in mid-August. Currently residing temporarily in Kelowna, B.C., at his parents’ residence with his fiancée and two-year-old daughter, Wright recently shared his harrowing ordeal in an interview on Edmonton AM.
Detailing the challenges he encountered while trying to remain in the U.S., Wright described a disheartening series of events that unfolded upon his return from Mexico. Facing interrogation and subsequent detention, he was subjected to restrictive measures and harsh treatment by authorities, including being shackled and confined in a facility for an extended period.
Reflecting on his experience, Wright emphasized his determination to fight for his right to stay in the U.S. to maintain a close relationship with his children. Despite exhausting all available avenues, including appeals and pleas from various officials, he eventually made the difficult decision to accept deportation to Canada.
Recalling the grim conditions in detention centers, Wright highlighted issues such as poor hygiene, overcrowding, substandard food, and mistreatment by officers. The psychological toll of the environment, characterized by constant surveillance and dehumanizing practices, added to his distress during the nine-month ordeal.
Now back in Canada, Wright is looking to rebuild his life and career in the oil and gas industry, drawing on support from his employer and family in Edmonton. With a new perspective on his unexpected return, he remains focused on moving forward and ensuring a stable future for himself and his loved ones.
