The North Rustico boardwalk has implemented a ban on e-bikes, bikes, and e-scooters, while allowing continued access for mobility devices. This decision was made by the town council in August following safety concerns raised by residents regarding the presence of bikes on the boardwalk.
Stephanie Moase, the town’s chief administrative officer, mentioned that the boardwalk, also known as the Sea Walk, underwent renovations due to safety issues. The newly renovated boardwalk is now exclusively designated for pedestrians and individuals using mobility devices, with e-bikes and regular bikes prohibited.
The upgrade to the boardwalk included thicker boards capable of supporting emergency vehicles, resulting in a quieter surface that made it difficult for pedestrians to hear approaching cyclists. Complaints about speeding bikes prompted the decision to enforce the ban.
Despite initial signage requesting no e-bikes on the boardwalk, ongoing complaints led to the official ban. Moase revealed that the town received numerous letters and comments over the past two summers regarding this issue.
Cyclists are advised to utilize Harbourview Drive as an alternative route, though some areas lack sufficient space and the road sits higher than the boardwalk. The town has engaged consultants to develop an active transportation plan to facilitate the sharing of roads between cyclists and vehicles.
Enforcement of the ban will not involve stationing personnel at the boardwalk but will rely on signage and public awareness. The town aims for peaceful coexistence among all users of the boardwalk.
