“Gratitude Banner Strengthening Detroit-Windsor Friendship”

Windsor locals are responding to a gratitude banner that was flown over the Detroit River on Monday. The large aerial banner, measuring nine-by-three meters, carries the message “Detroit and Canada are bridged in friendship” and was coordinated by the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) and Metro Detroit.

Eric Larson, the CEO of DDP, emphasized that the banner aims to underscore the significance of U.S.-Canada friendship amid current cross-border tensions. He highlighted the timing of the gesture on Canada’s Thanksgiving as a fitting moment to express appreciation, especially with the U.S. increasingly apologizing for past actions.

Residents of Windsor have felt the impact of tariffs on Canada’s automotive industry, with Stellantis attributing recent layoffs to these trade measures. Additionally, disputes and delays concerning the Gordie Howe International Bridge opening led to only Canadian officials attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony in July.

The banner event, according to Larson, symbolizes a modest acknowledgment of Canada’s importance and leadership. The banner was visible along the Detroit River throughout the day, with Windsor residents expressing gratitude for the gesture but indicating reluctance to cross into the U.S. amidst ongoing trade tensions.

One resident, Jack Paterson, shared that tensions with the Trump administration have deterred him from visiting Detroit. Despite these challenges, he believes the banner reinforces the enduring bond between Windsor and Detroit. Similarly, Priscilla Boismier appreciated the gesture but remains hesitant to visit the American side of the river until certain political changes occur.

Wayne Jahn, another local, recognized the banner as a representation of Detroit’s fondness for its Canadian neighbors, despite current circumstances dictating their interactions. Larson hopes the banner serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between residents on both sides of the border, envisioning a return to the successful economic and social relationship that has characterized North America.
