“P.E.I. Government Takes Over Home Heating Aid Program”

Starting in November, Prince Edward Islanders seeking assistance with home heating costs will have the opportunity to apply for aid at any Access P.E.I. location. The provincial government is taking over the program from the Salvation Army, offering eligible applicants up to $1,200 in support. Applications can still be submitted through the Salvation Army until the end of October, after which Islanders can apply in person at Access P.E.I. offices or online through the Access P.E.I. website.

Housing Minister Kent Dollar emphasized that the program’s criteria and structure will remain the same, with an added emphasis on expanding access to the program. The government has earmarked over $7 million for this initiative, aiming to streamline operations internally to potentially reduce administrative costs and enhance accessibility, particularly for rural residents.

With more than 5,000 applications processed last year, the program plays a crucial role in assisting Islanders facing financial constraints, especially amidst the escalating prices of home heating oil. Dollar noted the recent spike in furnace oil prices on the island, reaching $2.07 per litre, marking a significant increase since the beginning of the year due to global fuel price hikes following geopolitical tensions.

In response to the surge in fuel prices, Dollar instructed staff to closely monitor the situation’s impact on the program. Detailed eligibility requirements can be accessed on the provincial government’s website for those interested in applying for assistance.
