Bagpiper Attacked in Ottawa Vows to Keep Playing

Kevin Murison, a bagpiper in Ottawa, receives mixed reactions while performing on a busy sidewalk during weekends. Despite some negative responses, he mostly receives positive feedback for his music. Murison, 35, often busks in full Highland attire on a bridge near the Ottawa Locks, beside the Château Laurier.

In a recent incident, Murison was approached by a man under the pretense of taking a photo, only to reveal a knife. Following a confrontation, Murison sustained a 15-centimetre gash in his bagpipe bag and required four stitches on his thumb. Prompt action by a passerby who called 911 led to the apprehension of the suspect by the police. The 25-year-old man faces assault charges, in addition to breaching probation.

Despite the unprovoked attack, Murison remains resilient and determined to continue playing the bagpipes. He speculates that the attack may have been aimed at his instrument rather than him personally. Murison, who has been playing the bagpipes for 15 years, is grateful for the support he has received from his band and the broader bagpiping community.

While recovering from his injuries, Murison is eager to return to busking once his hand heals. He expresses his determination not to be deterred by the unfortunate incident and looks forward to resuming his performances.
