Man Charged with Threatening PM Carney & More

A man from Calgary has been taken into custody and charged with allegedly threatening to harm Prime Minister Mark Carney. Jamie Dacosta, aged 31, is facing one charge of making threats. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) received information in July about a death threat posted against the prime minister on a YouTube account.

The incident involving Carney is said to have occurred between July 25 and July 26, 2026, according to court documents. Dacosta recently appeared in a Calgary court via CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre where he is currently detained. In addition to the charge related to the prime minister, Dacosta is also facing other charges, including extortion, three counts of making threats, and wearing a disguise with criminal intent, all pertaining to allegations concerning an automotive business.

During the court appearance, defense lawyer Adriano Iovinelli mentioned that Dacosta was denied bail on all charges by Justice Clarissa Pearce. Iovinelli requested that the case be revisited on Friday to decide whether the Crown’s specialized prosecution unit would handle all of Dacosta’s legal matters.
