A recent study found that a significant portion of vacationers form opinions on potential holiday accommodations within just 10 seconds of viewing them. The research, based on a survey of 2,000 travelers, highlighted specific features that deter holidaymakers, such as damaged kitchen cabinet doors, beaded curtains, and cluttered fridge doors. Dolls or mannequins in bedrooms and fluffy toilet seat covers were also identified as major turn-offs.
Conversely, elements like premium bedding and convenient charging sockets were noted to enhance the appeal of a bedroom. According to Amy Durn, an interior design partner at Booking.com, travelers seek homestays with character but emphasize the importance of striking a balance to leave a lasting positive impression.
The study further revealed that a significant percentage of vacationers make accommodation decisions faster than brewing a cup of tea. Factors that detract from outdoor spaces include unkempt gardens, lack of greenery, and excess concrete. Additionally, respondents expressed aversion to plastic plants, old BBQ equipment, and certain interior décor elements like taxidermy and floral print carpets.
Interestingly, the research indicated that a majority of respondents have not considered renting out their homes due to concerns about readiness for renters. Amy Durn stressed the impact of simple design choices in transforming a home into an attractive holiday rental, emphasizing the importance of creating a welcoming, well-maintained, and visually appealing space for potential guests.
